In the Srimad Bhagavatam( about 800 BC ) ,
Narakasura is the asura son of the goddess Earth Bhudevi and the 3rd avatar of Vishnu. He is said to have grown to be a demon through association with Banasura (EFFECTS OF BAD FRIENDSHIP ) His mother, the earth, sought the boon from Vishnu that her son should have a long life, and that he should be all powerful. (MOTHER'S LOVE)
Drunk with power, . Naraka had become the overlord of both the heavens and earth.( Igniting IMAGINATION ) .. Addicted to power, he stole the possessions of Aditi, while also kidnapping 16000 women( GREED N OVER-AMBITION) As promised to Mother Earth, Naraka was allowed to enjoy a long reign. ( MATTER OF PRINCIPLE IN KEEPING THE WORD )
When Satyabhama heard of the Narakasura's ill treatment of women, she was enraged. As promised to the Devas and Aditi, Krishna and Bhama attacked the great fortress of Narakasura, riding his mount Garuda with wife Satyabhama. The battle was furiously fought. Narakasura possessed 11 Akshauhini (a division of the army), that he unleashed on Krishna. However, the Lord slew them all with little effort. ( THE POWER OF GOOD OVER EVIL )
In desperation, Narakasura launched his great weapon, sataghini (a thunderbolt) on Krishna. it made no impact . Krishna beheaded him with his Sudarshana Chakra ( RESTORATION OF JUSTICE N PEACE)
Before dying, the Asura requested a boon that his death should be celebrated . This day is celebrated as 'Naraka Chaturdashi' - the second day of Diwali.Krishna grants his last wish (KINDNESS EVEN TOWARDS AN ENEMY )
Krishna's and Satyabhama's victory on Narakasura translated into freedom for all his prisoners and honoring of Aditi. Having rescued the 16,100 women, Krishna married them to restore them to their former dignity( DIGNITY N RESPECT TOWARDS WOMEN )
One must learn from Puranas and Scriptures the need to be good and the ways to be so. Indian Vedic pool of Information has so much to offer and we must try to incorporate the values of ancient literature into our modern lives for better perspectives.
We should move towards doing the right things rather than Doing things right.
